  Step 1 of 16

  In this how-to i am using scrap fabric and a contrasting thread so you can see where my stitches are. When you make your own pockets you will use a matching thread and your chosen fabric although i recommend you practice first on scrap fabric.

  On your fabric mark your desired pocket measurement where you want it to be in chalk.

  Fuse behind the pocket on the wrong side of the fabric.

  Step 3 of 16

  Cut 2 welts 2.5 cm tall and the pocket length + 3cm wide. For example, my pocket is 15cm wide so my welts measure 18cm wide. Cut interfacing the same size.

  Step 4 of 16

  Iron the interfacing onto the wrong side of the welts, fold and press in half and stitch close to the raw edge to keep together.

• 

  Step 5 of 16

  With the right side of your fabric facing up pin your welts to the line with the raw edges to the centre. Take your time doing this as it must be EXACT. Stitch exactly in the centre of the welts 1.5cm from the ends. Backtack at each end.

  Step 6 of 16

  Cut the fabric through the middle of the welts stopping 1.5cm from either end and create a triangle (see picture in the next step). Do not cut past your stitching points.

  Fold the welts through the opening to the wrong side of the fabric and iron in place.

• 

  Step 9 of 16

  Stitch the triangles down catching the welts. Make sure the welts are butted against each other when doing this.

  This is how your bound pocket will look on the right side of your fabric.

• 

  Step 11 of 16

  Now for the pocket part. Cut a piece of fabric the desired length x2.
  

  (Here you can use the same fabric as the front of your garment since the fabric will show on the outside with this type of pocket or you can use a lining fabric.)

  Step 12 of 16

  Pin to the bottom welt lining up the raw edges and stitch in place. Fold down and iron along stitch line.

  Step 13 of 16

  Do the same with the top of your pocket, matching the top raw edge with the raw edge of the top welt. Stitch in place.

  Step 14 of 16

  Sew the sides of your pocket together remembering to catch the welts too. Curving the bottom of your pocket prevents those pesky corners for lint and yucky things to get caught in.

  Trim the pocket seams.

  This is how your pocket will look from the front, obviously your whole pocket will be covered by the front of your garment :)
