  Step 1 of 17

  This is a cloth bag with metal handles and an unexpected twist. The handles turn inwards towards the bag so it open into the shape of a bucket.

  You will need

  Self fabric

  Lining Fabric

  7” Metal Rings X 2

  zipper foot for your sewing machine

  *Also, this project works much better if you have a sewing machine with a long arm

• 

  Step 3 of 17

  Cut the self fabric into a piece 12 ½” wide and 32” long Do the same for the lining fabric.

  These measurements include a 1/2" seam allowance.

• 

  Step 4 of 17

  Fold the self fabric in half, with right sides facing. At the top (near the raw edge) mark off 1 ½”. Pin both sides.

  Step 5 of 17

  Sew both sides, remembering to leave 1 ½” at the top unfinished.

• 

  Step 6 of 17

  Press the seam allowance flat, including the part that was not sewn. Topstitch only the top 1 1/2" so it stays flat. Turn right side out.

  Step 7 of 17

  Fold the lining piece in half. Mark off 1” at the top. Sew along the sides until this point and leave open at top.

• 

  Step 8 of 17

  Now you will need the self fabric and one of the metal loops. Fold the 1 ½” of self fabric over the metal loop into itself on one side and pin into place (wrong sides facing). You will have to use your zipper foot now to sew the fabric over the metal ring.

  Step 9 of 17

  Here I have pinned it to show where you will be sewing. You may find it easier to pin the whole side in place over the ring first. I think it is easier to pin the first section and then push the fabric the way you want it to go, because it moves around a lot when it is next to the ring.

  Step 10 of 17

  Sew the handle in place with the presser foot as close to the metal ring as possible. You are sewing on the inside of the bag.

  Step 11 of 17

  Do this again for the other side. You will have to maneuver the first metal ring out of the way, and this is where the long-armed sewing machine comes in handy

  When you are finished sewing the metal rings in, you have something that looks like this. It is almost complete, expect for the lining.

  Now take the lining piece. Press the 1” left unsewn at the top flat on each side, so that the raw edge turns towards the wrong side of the lining.

  Step 14 of 17

  Put the lining inside the bag (wrong side to wrong side). The edge you just pressed will now be sewn by hand over the raw edge left from sewing the self over the metal loop. Use sturdy whip stitches to tack the lining to the self. Do this around the whole bag.

  When finished, the inside looks like this.

  You are done! You now have a bucket bag with metal straps. Turn the handles inwards towards the bag to open it into its bucket shape.

  The 7” rings allow the bag to fit over your shoulder, but you can use smaller rings if you want a hand-held evening purse.
