Hand Sewn Blind Stitch (2682 Views)

You will find many occasions to use the blind stitch, a stitch which is used quite extensively in dressmaking. It is used when virtually no stitch is to show on either side of your garment, and is most appropriately used on hems, bias bands and folds.

Step 1 of 6

Press and fold the seam allowance to the wrong side of garment. Don’t fret over the excess seam allowance, this will be remedied while utilizing the blind stitch.

Hold the garment in your left hand while you roll the hem edge back about ¼” (6mm).
Step 3 of 6

Stitch the garment from right to left while holding the turned edge in your left hand. Take a very small horizontal stitch in the garment catching only 1-2 threads.

Take the next stitch in the hem, at the exact opposite point of your first stitch.
Step 5 of 6

Create your next stitch ¼” – 1/2” to the left of the first stitch. Continue alternating stitches being very careful to keep the stitches on the garment side very small. Do not pull too tightly as the hem will gather.
Step 6 of 6

Flip the garment over to reveal a lovely, seemingly seamless hem.
